Ariadne Faries, ’10-10-10 Labyrinth. Dedicated to Curaçao’. Acrylic on canvas, 2010/2011. Made on the occasion of October 10, 2010. On this date Curaçao became a constituent country within the Dutch Kingdom.
Her painting ‘The black nun’ was made after the artists’ personal struggle and her coming to terms with the church and her Roman Catholic background. It was selected for three exhibitions. In 2010 it was displayed in the large group art event ‘Antepasado di Futuro’ in the Curaçao Museum. This exhibition marked the transition of Curaçao becoming a constituent country within the Dutch kingdom. In 2011 it was also selected for ‘Island Reflections. The Contemporary Art of Curaçao.’, which took place in Michigan, USA and was guest curated by Susan Wilczak. In 2012-2013 it was part of ‘Caribbean Cross-roads of the World’ in the Queens Museum of Art in New York.
