Monument for Autonomy

Autonomie Monument (Monument for Autonomy): Steunend op eigen kracht doch met de wil elkander bij te staan. Designed by J. Fresco (1911-1990).
Monument symbolizing the autonomy of the 6 islands of the Netherlands Antilles. On December 15th, 1954 the Charter for the Kingdom of The Netherlands was established. This event is commemorated yearly on December 15th and is called ‘Statuutdag’. On October 10, 2010 (10-10-10) the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved and Curaçao became an constituant country within the Kingdom.

The 6 birds represent the 6 islands and the (above) text written on the side of the pedestal emphasizes the bond between the islands. Her Majesty Queen Juliana of the Netherlands (1909- 2004) unveiled the monument in 1955.

The monument was also photographed by Carlo Wallé (1971) for his The 52 Prints Project.
