Fred Breebaart (1954) was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands but spent an important part of his childhood in Curaçao. After relocating to the Netherlands, finishing his education and a career as an insurance broker, he decided to dramatically change his life. In 1973 he moved to Mijas in Spain to pursue a career in the visual arts.
After spending his childhood years in Curaçao the island always remained in his heart. It wasn’t surprising that after becoming succesful as an artist he also wanted to do an exhibition in Curaçao. Fred Breebaart’s first exhibition in Curaçao took place in 1993 at Gallery Eighty-Six, then owned by Henny Blok. This Gallery closed in 2005 and the artist is now represented by Gallery Alma Blou owned by Mrs. Lusette Verboom.
In his paintings Fred Breebaart consciously uses a simple, figurative style. With bright colors and an engaging imagination he creates a festive scene in front of a well known building, monument or location. The figurines are always gay and the sky is always blue. His work is about happiness, gayety and sweet memories of what was or might have been.
People familiar with his work already know that there is a small Fred Breebaart-figure present in all his paintings. Adults and children alike enjoy finding out where the artist placed himself in the scene.
The exhibition lasts till January 25, 2014.
Fred Breebaart lives and works in Delft, the Netherlands. The following two images are paintings he made of this picturesque Dutch city.
