Curaçao Art organizes new visual arts project

Curaçao Art held an information evening on Wednesday, March 12, at the Cathedral of Thorns, about a new project. On this occasion, Curaçao Art presented its plan with the working title “Despensa i  Pordon” (Apologies and Forgiveness). With this, the foundation wants to contribute to the awareness of the slavery past and the healing process through an exhibition of visual art with 25 local visual artists.

Curators Sinuhe Oomen and Josée Thissen-Rojer informed attendees about the project during the evening. NAAM, National Archeological Anthropological Memory Management, is providing a series of workshops for the participating artists. During the workshops, participants will study the report “Ketenen van het Verleden” (Chains of the Past), on which the Netherlands’ apology for its slavery past is based.

Curaçao Art is collaborating with Fundashon Pro Bista for this project to make the exhibition accessible to the visually impaired. The artists participating in the project have been asked to consider this target group in their work. An employee of Pro Bista attended the information evening to explain how people with visual impairments experience art and what opportunities are available.

The exhibition associated with this project is planned for October and November 2025. The above mentioned report serves as the basis for this. This exhibition should show where we want to be as a community in 10 years. The artists present showed great interest in the various components of this project.

The first phase of the project is made possible by the DNB Fund – Caribbean region, in cooperation with Het Cultuur Fonds CG and the Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations.

Curaçao Art was founded in 2011 to give local visual arts and artists more attention. The website curacao-art.com has been publishing information about exhibitions and profiles of visual artists in Curaçao since 2013.
