This exhibition showcases her oil paintings, characterized by subtle details and a nostalgic quality that have become her signature style.
Born in Otrobanda in 1935, Hernandez began painting in the 1970s while living in New York. Longing for imagery that reflected her roots, she created her first painting, the Democratic Party Clubhouse on Breedestraat, in Otrobanda.
After returning to Curaçao, she turned her attention to the interiors and everyday scenes of Otrobanda’s homes, preserving their unique ambience, chandeliers, rocking chairs, lace tablecloths, shutter windows, and cozy corners, all with the most intricate detail. Her canvases are more than art. They are living records of Curaçao’s cultural heritage.
Hernandez’s career includes seven solo exhibitions and several group shows, with her first solo taking place in 1981 at the Curaçao Museum. In 2005, to celebrate her 70th birthday, she returned to the Curaçao Museum with Hasibu di Kas, her second solo show there. Hasibu di Kas II marks her fifth solo exhibition at Landhuis Bloemhof. Besides her art, Hernandez is cherished as one of the first Papiamentu female TV personalities and program makers at Telecuraçao and as the beloved host of the cooking show Kushina di Oro, alongside publishing several well-known cookbooks.
To mark her milestone birthday and artistic journey, a book is in preparation. It features photographs of her paintings paired with original haikus written by the artist herself, offering a unique glimpse into the intimate relationship between her words and images.
Hasibu di Kas II will be showing till November 1, 2025.
