Cruz, Ruben la

Ruben la Cruz (1954) is born in Curaçao. At the age of 17, he relocated to the Netherlands. In 1986 he completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Art The Hague.
Since the nineties he started coming back to Curaçao, doing projects with disadvantaged groups in the community.
In 2012 he participated in the guest program at Instituto Buena Bista, together with Karolien Helweg. They worked on their own artwork ‘Curaçao Gamble’ and taught a seminar ‘The fable newspaper’.
His collaboration with Helweg also yielded a publication on the tin houses in Curaçao. In 2015 La Cruz and Helweg held an exhibition in the Curaçao Museum on the reuse of tin in Curaçao, titled ‘Blik op Curaçao’ (Tin in Curaçao), which also translates as ‘Looking at Curaçao’. They documented all the remaining dwellings, completely or partially made of tin. With this publication, they documented an important part of the local cultural heritage.
