A rare collection
Ruud en Inge Janknegt own a prime sample of ethnic and tribal art from the region called Oceania. As collectors, the couple had a preference for primary indigenous religious artifacts from different tribes. Most of the collected pieces are made from wood, stone or bone. They may sometimes be decorated with shells and feathers or painted with natural colorings. Every tribe has his own authentic features which can be recognized in the pieces. Artifacts like these were used by the tribes as powerful symbols, representing their ancestors, gods or spirits. The collection contains statues from Papua New Guinea (River Sipek), West Irian(Asmat) and Borneo (Kalimantan).

Inge Janknegt-van Gendt was born in Aruba and raised in Curaçao. At a later age, when living in the Netherlands, she became interested in the visual arts and took painting classes from a Dutch expressionist artist. Her contacts with artists and missionaries in Oceania, awakened her interested in the native tribal art of the Southeast Asian region. Through her travels she started studying and collecting tribal artifacts connected to ancestry. She has a profound knowledge on the subject and is regulary consulted by European ethnological museums.

In 2000 Inge and Ruud relocated to Curaçao. After 30 years of collecting ethnic art and artifacts from Oceania, the couple is now putting part of their collection up for sale at Landhuis Bloemhof.
