An exhibition with paintings, mixed media works and ceramics by three leading women in the Curaçao art scene: Ria Houwen, Ariadne Faries and Annemieke Dicke.
Over the years these women have matured and grown, as artists and in womanhood. With this new exhibition these three power houses of art will touch and inspire you.
Ria Houwen is well known for her beautiful paintings of water. She is also fascinated by the rugged landscape of the island. The sky, the sea and the typical island nonchalance are characteristics that inspire her oeuvre. Lately it seems as if a whole range of unexplored tracks from the subconsciousness have burst open to create new and deeper dimensions in her art. Like a magic seeping and penetrating into every brushstroke and onto the structure of her works.
Ariadne Faries is a painter, illustrator and author of children’s literature, graphic designer and photographer. Her work embodies emotional, psychological and spiritual power. Her blend of rough-painted surfaces on canvas created with clothes pins and brushes, combined with powerful compositions are abstract and representational at the same time. The cloth pin is her brush and trademark. Sometimes it is integrated with the painting itself. Her motivation lies in the way the audience sees her art. The artwork is a live experience that can be interpreted in many ways. “I don’t create my work, but my work creates me.”
Annemieke Dicke has been working with clay and bronze for the last 20 years. This is also very keen for her when it comes to her paintings. She has a tremendous drive to give her paintings a ‘skin’, just like her clay and bronze, with the initial thought that a painting too should stand the test of time. Her works are mainly interpersonal and autobiographical, always having a deeper and personal meaning. Her work is realistic and this makes it relatable to the audience: often you can find a piece of yourself within her realms.
Meet the artists
