Hortence Brouwn was born in Surinam and attended the Art Academy in Surinam between 1960 and 1963. She came to Curaçao in 1973 but before that she was working as a mathematics teacher in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In Curaçao she taught maths at the Lauffer MAVO till 1996. Next to being a teacher she was also a sculptress, so after settling down on the island she soon started to participate in group exhibitions and had her first solo in The Curaçao Museum in 1984.
Hortence works in bronze, concrete, marble and often uses the local Curaçao Lime-stone for her statues. Her ‘Big Mama’ statues which can be admired at several (private) locations on the island are well known. A bronze ‘Big Mama’ is placed at Museum Kurá Hulanda. Only recently she finished another one in Pietermaai, made in concrete, on a small square next to the new shopping area.
