José Maria Capricorne (1932) was born in Curaçao and is the first local artist formally educated and trained at an art academy. He grows up in Otrobanda (district in Willemstad), amongst the musicians and other artist of that period. His family is from the plantation Esperanza, and this is also where Capricorne spends his childhood. His time on the plantation was instrumental for the formation of his creative expression and artistic idiom, still apparent in his paintings.
Although Capricorne has been living in the Netherlands for quite some years, his native island in the Caribbean continues to have a major influence on his work. For the present exhibition Capricorne chose to use the circus theme for this series. ‘A day at the circus’ refers to lightness and humor in ordinary daily life.
