GreenKidz teams up with Roberto Tjon a Meeuw
On Thursday, June 6, 2019, (former) City Beach 88 in Pietermaai unveiled their GreenKidz ‘Wall-of-Art’ in presence of friends, partners, tourists, press, and artist Roberto Tjon a Meeuw. The wall separating the city beach from boutique hotel Scuba Lodge was given a makeover.
Under guidance of Roberto Tjon a Meeuw, accompanied by GreenKidz teachers, pupils of Kolegio Chaya Willems decorated the wall with various sea-creatures, made of washed up plastic from the north side of the island.
“The goal of the Greenkidz wall at the (former) City Beach 88, is not only to let people enjoy the lovely creations, but also to raise awareness among young and old. It is important that everyone contributes to the prservation of our planet. Awareness of the environment and the world around us deserves a major place in the educational curriculum and the reason why we have been proud supporters of GreenKidz for a long time”, explains Christina Sieperda of 2B Holidays BV, which includes both Scuba Lodge and (former) City Beach 88.
Maya Mathias, director of GreenKidz Foundation adds: “It’s essential that children learn about the environment from an early age. All GreenKidz schools pay attention to the environment. But for children to really learn to live a sustainable life, it should become a habit. Thanks to our GreenKidz lessons this doesn’t have to be boring at al. In fact, there are plenty of fun ways for children to learn how to recycle. The pupils enjoyed their visit to City Beach 88 and their collaboration with artist Roberto Tjon a Meeuw”.
After the unveiling of the wall Christina Sieperda handed a cheque for the amount of $1.757 to GreenKidz. This donation is part of the so-called Dollar-a-Night program, introduced by Scuba Lodge in January 2017. Since then, the hotel makes a quarterly donation to GreenKidz and CARF, the Curaçao Animal Rights Foundation. For every night that a hotel room or apartment is occupied, the hotel donates one dollar to the charity. The hotel guests are asked if they want to support GreenKidz or CARF with their stay.
“We are immensely happy with the support we receive from both Scuba Lodge and (former) City Beach 88”, says Maya Mathias. “Thanks to their donations and involvement we can teach young people about plastic waste and the important principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, and refuse. We work towards a future of nature conservation. It is essential that we realize that young people are not only the future, but also the present”.
