Gallery Alma Blou introduces Godelieve Smulders: Commitment, drive and passion are the sources of vitality and resilience in the work of Godelieve Smulders. The title Moveshon is about playfulness, movement and love.
The artist visits Curaçao for a few months each year. From her balcony, she admires the color dynamics of the passing clouds. In the dynamics of the clouds, she sees figures that work in her imagination. In this, she discovers the playfulness of love and brings this back to the canvas.
Godelieve is a particularly vital woman. This vitality is reflected in her fascination with the infinite energy of humans and animals in courtship, adorning each other, reproduction, the miracle of procreation, being pregnant, and the primal experience of childbirth.
She tries to accentuate and directly portray this from a feminine identity and perspective—the place where vitality and love meet.
In the last theme of her work called “Humanimal,” she wants to show the underlying dependence and, therefore, in principle, equality of man and animal. She depicts this by giving her sculptures of human figures a horse’s head.
Godelieve Smulders’ oeuvre includes large-scale sculptures in public places, life-sized paintings, and internet projects.
