Documentary ‘Yubismo – Life and art of Yubi Kirindongo’.
The documentary on visual artist Yubi Kirindongo, titled ‘Yubismo – Life and art of Yubi Kirindongo’ premiered on August 25, 2022, at The Movies Punda, in Curaçao, in a filled cinema hall.
The film is by director Corry van Heijningen. She spent five years working on the 60-minute movie. Corry van Heijningen was director of TeleCuraçao’s children’s program ‘Hier zijn wij, wie ben jij’ (This is us, who are you) in 1980. ‘Yubismo’ is her first documentary.
Based on interviews with art lovers, professionals, friends, and family, the movie portrays Curacao’s internationally known and much-loved visual artist Yubi Kirindongo (Curaçao, 1946). In the documentary, Yubi is frequently speaking, and it becomes apparent that he is also creative in his use of language. With his dark voice, he speaks quickly and laconically. But he doesn’t mince words and intersperses his story with jokes and puns.
Before the film is shown, seventy-six-year-old Yubi gets to speak, and he does so in Papiamentu. He greets his fellow artists sitting in the audience. Teasingly, he urges them not to lose hope, for likely, they also will be immortalized in a documentary in the future. This evening, at least, it is his turn. Yubi emphasizes that the documentary happened to him, like so many things in his life. Sometimes he learns from events, sometimes not, but the rest, he says, is history. Yubi will also watch the film for the first time and expects to get to know himself better or at least find out how others see him. Yubi is holding back a bit as he says with a wink, it’s not necessarily all true.
Yubi concludes by thanking those present for coming and hopes everyone will enjoy the film. He expresses the wish that this documentary can help to ensure that Corry van Heijningen can get sufficient funds in the future to realize all her projects. Especially the projects intended for schools.
