Artwork by Merly Trappenberg reported stolen.

Unknown persons stole a painting by artist Merly Trappenberg from the Sambil shopping center in Curaçao, around 6 p.m. last Wednesday. The artist filed a report with the police.

On Friday, November 4, Merly Trappenberg went to her art gallery in Sambil with a customer. Once there, she immediately noticed that one of her works was missing. Merly at once alerted mall security. CCTV footage from Sambil showed that the art theft occurred at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Three white men, probably tourists, stole the painting. Surveillance footage from the parking lot captured that the thieves who took the artwork got into a pickup truck outside and drove away.

The stolen work is an original painting in mixed media. It is a portrait of an Afro-Caribbean woman wearing a headscarf, done in color. The picture is painted on wood and framed in wood. The title is “Girl”, and the dimensions of the work are 82 cm x 63 cm. The work bears the artist’s signature.

Merly Trappenberg was trained at the former Akademia di Arte and has been a well-known artist in Curaçao for many years. She has had an art gallery in Sambil for seven years, where she exhibits her work. Some of her works were temporarily displayed in the hallway of Sambil. There also hung the work that the three thieves took on Wednesday.

Merly hopes the police will find her work soon. But until she has it back, as many people as possible must know about the theft. Should anyone see it anywhere, people need to know that it is a stolen painting and must be returned to Merly.

Merly Trappenberg can be reached through the website curacao-art.com, info@curacao-art.com, or tel no. (+5999)690-5185.
