Current Breath at Sint Jorisbaai
A new artwork will be unveiled this Saturday, January 11, at 4 pm at the coast of Pos Salu, near Sint Jorisbaai. The Curaçao artist Avantia Damberg and Maura Biava from Italy, collaborated on this sculpture, which was realized over a period of two and a half years.
Algae inspiration
The artwork is inspired by the Braarudosphaeraceae, a family of unicellular coastal algae characterized by their scales with five-fold symmetry. The geometric shape of this micro-organism is the dodecahedron: 12 surfaces connected to each other, each shaped like a pentagon. The pentagon is constantly repeated in nature in cacti, flowers, shells and the like.
This shape serves as an archetype for life and forms the basis of the new sculpture. The combination of water and oxygen brings life to our planet, and these elements are incorporated into the sculpture.
The sculpture, placed on a pentagonal pedestal, consists of a metal dodecahedron, referring to the algae that provide oxygen in the water. Water sprays upwards from the dodecahedron in the form of metal tubes. These tubes, which contain ‘air bubbles’, are made of aluminum and can move with the wind.
Pos Salu Sculpture Park
The sculpture was commissioned by Stichting Uniek Curaçao, which, together with the Kunst in de Openbare Ruimte Foundation (SKOR), is combating the illegal dumping of waste in nature. It is the fifth sculpture of the new Pos Salu Open Air Sculpture Park.
The project was made possible by SKOR Kòrsou and Stichting Uniek Curaçao, with financial support from the Mondriaan Fund and Het Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied.
