About Anthony
After graduating from Radulphus College, Anthony Wijshijer (Curaçao, 1942) moved to the Netherlands. He studied at DEVA, Decoratie Etalage Vakschool Almelo. In the 1960s, he returned to Curaçao and began working at the renowned jewelry store Spritzer & Fuhrmann (1927-1990) in Punda, where he was responsible for the window displays. During this period, he also enrolled in a correspondence drawing course (L.O. Tekenen), through the LOI, Leidse Onderwijs Instellingen.
A few years later, Anthony relocated once again to the Netherlands, this time to work for the national tax office, the Rijksbelastingdienst in Amstelveen. On weekdays, in the evening, he commuted to Amsterdam to pursue his degree (M.O.) at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He eventually returned to Curaçao with his family and continued working at the Belastingdienst until his retirement.
Artistry
Anthony has been an active member of the Curaçao art scene, regularly participating in group exhibitions and even a few solo exhibitions. His most recent solo show was in 2012, in the gallery of the former Kas di Kultura.
He has created an entirely new series of drawings and watercolors for the upcoming exhibition.
Style and inspiration
His style is figurative, and Anthony draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings: an abandoned old pickup truck in the mondi, a bunch of flowers from the karawara spañó, or a roadside scene from everyday life. For Anthony, these are the moments worth pausing for and capturing. He has a strong preference for portraiture in charcoal or graphite, several of which are featured in the exhibition, alongside one watercolor portrait.
A special tribute
