Juliana, Elis

Cultural icon Elis Juliana (1927-2013) lived his entire life in Curaçao,  observing and investigating its history, people and culture. He translated his observations into theater shows, radio programs, short stories, art and more. His first visual art exhibition was held in 1965 at the Cultureel Centrum Curaçao(Cultural Centre Curaçao).

In 1973 Elis Juliana received the prestigious Cola Debrot prize for the visual arts from the Curacao Government.

A few days before his death Elis Juliana received an honorary doctor’s degree at the University of Curaçao for his life’s work on identity, literature, anthropology, archeology, graphic art and the visual arts.
