Roest & Koraal
Roest & Koraal. Première of a filmed portrait of Ellen Spijkstra, visual artist in Curaçao, by Felix de Rooy and Kirk Claes.
Ellen Spijkstra arrived in Curaçao in 1980 and has since worked on the island as a ceramist, photographer, designer and teacher. Through her work as a visual artist she has had a notable influence on the art scene of the island and has left her marks on various locations. Apart from shots of her artworks the movie will show Ellen in her studio and at several other spots on the island. Ellen will be explaining her work but her ex-students and clients will also be sharing their views.
Prior to the showing of Roest & Koraal (Rust & Coral) the documentary Island Reflections will be shown.
Island Reflections, also by Felix de Rooy and Kirk Claes, was commissioned in 2010 by the Curaçao Tourist Board on the occasion of the visual art exhibit by 10 Curaçao artists in Holland, Michigan, USA. This exhibit was curated by the American curator Susan Wilczak. In Island Reflections each of the 10 participating artists are shown in a 3 minutes portrait: Ria Houwen, Herman van Bergen, Carlos Blaaker, Midzy Longuevergne, Ariadne Faries, Philippe Zanolino, Hortence Brouwn, Yubi Kirindongo, Tony Monsanto and Ellen Spijkstra.
The short portrait of Ellen resulted in the present movie: Roest & Koraal (Rust & Coral) which will premiere on Wednesday, May 22nd in Teatro Luna Blou. Art historian Jennifer Smit will begin the evening with a short introduction. Length of each short movies is 30 minutes.
