John de Bont exhibits in Gallery Alma Blou

Sculptor John de Bont (Amsterdam, 1948) exhibits at Gallery Alma Blou in Curaçao. The opening will take place on May 9th, at 6 PM.

Although at present John lives in Amsterdam, he has always considered Curaçao his home away from home. He lived in Curaçao for 20 years, working as a visual artist and teaching at the local art academy Akademia di Arte. He was also one of the driving forces behind the opening of a bronze foundery (Bronsgieterij) in 1998, together with Hortence Brouwn and Anne de Vries.

Two of his bronze portraits are on display at Museum Kurá Hulanda: a portrait of Jacob Gelt Dekker, the owner of Kura Hulanda, and of the well known artist Ras Elijah, which is called ‘Rastaman’.

John prefers working in stone and at present uses coral stone. After visiting an exhibition at the Allard Pierson Museum in The Netherlands of Greek painted statues, he also started using color for his sculptures. His coral stone statues are painted in bright blue, red, gold and deep black.

Through ads in the local newspapers John is inviting all his friends and ex-students to join him at the opening of this new exhibition. On May 9th, the day of the opening, this dedicated sculptor is also celebrating his 65th birthday on his beloved island.
