Dick Hoogerwerf in The Curaçao Museum

Exhibition of paintings by Dick Hoogerwerf (1926 – 1993), titled:

Moby Dick.

The exhibition Dick Hoogerwerf ‘Moby Dick’ is showing in the Curaçao Museum from January 27 till March 31, 2017.

In 2016 mr. Roy Luft, living in Ithaca, New York, donated three portraits by Dick Hoogerwerf to the Curaçao Museum. These three portraits originally hung in his father’s residence, and later in his own house. Luft felt that the three artworks were part of Curaçao’s cultural heritage and this prompted him to present them to the museum.

From previous visits to the island, he knew that the museum already possessed two other paintings, Rituals and The slavewall. With his mother’s permission, he sent his own 3 paintings to Curaçao: Machi, Ruth and Uhuru.

Luft’s father, Julian Donald Luft, bought the paintings during his business travels. He was a shoes salesperson for the Caribbean. Machi was exhibited in the Curaçao Museum, in a solo show curiously titled Dick Hoogerwerf. Volkstypen in olieverf, (Dick Hoogerwerf. Folkloric types in oilpaint) in 1962.
