Carlos Blaaker’s new exhibition is titled Wenden, meaning ‘Twist’ in English. The title refers the moment when everything is ready to make a turn and take a new direction. What happens next is a period of turmoil, followed by reorientation and stabilization, leading to a new course or interpretation.
Blaaker is one of the few local artist who incorporates social issues in his work. His new series consists of paintings and small synthetic statues.

Carlos Blaaker was born in Surinam. He attended the Academie voor Hoger Kunst- en Cultuuronderwijs in Paramaribo. After attending the Art Student’s League in New York he moved to the Netherlands were he kept developing his artistic career.
Blaaker has a passion for the authentic Caribbean culture, observing and depicting the way of life of the island people. He has had several exhibitions in the Netherlands among others in The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He has also exhibited in Surinam and the United States.
Blaaker has been living in Curaçao since 2008. In 2010 Gallery Alma Blou hosted the first exhibition by this very talented artists. Gallery Alma Blou is very proud to present his work again to the public of Curaçao.
The opening words are by Diederik Radder, a great art lover and friend of Carlos.
