Sculpture Trail at Blue Bay Curaçao

The first sculpture for the Blue Bay Sculpture Trail at Blue Bay Curaçao was unveiled on the 26th of April 2017.

Board of Stichting Beeldentuin Blue Bay (Sculpture trail Blue Bay Foundation), presented the first sculpture by Curaçao visual artist Ellen Spijkstra. A ceramic totem pole titled Door de jaren heen (Over the years).

At the end of 2017, 6 additional sculptures will be realized along the trail running from the resort’s main entrance to the pond at Landhuis Blauw. The sculpture trail will significantly promote the visual arts and artists of Curaçao. It will highlight the international level and high standard of our local artists to art lovers, locals and tourists.

The totem pole by Ellen Spijkstra measures 206 cm in height. As described in the book about the artist, Global Local (2008), the totem pole is a recurrent theme in her oeuvre. This particular one, Over the Years, is inspired by the royal palm.

Ellen Spijkstra is an internationally acclaimed ceramist and photographer. At her studio Chihume for 30 years she taught ceramic classes, instructing her students in technical craftsmanship, aesthetic design and innovative use of materials. On a regular basis renowned ceramists, the world over, were invited for art-residencies at her studio.

In recent years Ellen has been mostly abroad, exhibiting and participating in art residency projects. She has been amongst others to South Korea and China. Both countries are birthplace for ceramic art and possess highly developed mastery of this art form.

The following artists have also been invited for the sculpture trail: Herman van Bergen, Avantia Damberg, Rien te Hennepe, Yubi Kirindongo and Brigitte Wawoe.
