Steve Bridgewater is a multi-talented individual. He is a visual artist, musician, dancer, and choreographer. In the 1970s, his friend, the well-known artist Yubi Kirindongo, introduced him to professional art. Steve started at the art academy and eventually completed three art courses. After the Vrije Academie and the art academy in The Hague, he also went to the art academy in Antwerp.
As a student, Steve had several exhibitions, and his work was included in the significant 1989 retrospective of Antillean art, Bida i Koló, at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. However, life pushed Steve in a different direction. In the cold European climate, where all windows and doors must remain closed, he suffered from allergies because of the painting materials. And besides, dance pulled at him. He had many opportunities to work as a dancer and choreographer and to do big productions.
In 2002, Steve returned to Curaçao but led a reclusive existence. Then, in 2013, Steve became seriously ill and spent three months in the hospital. He recovered very slowly and afterward took up art again in earnest. He started to work on a new series of paintings for an exhibition. In 2022, Steve exhibited at Zanolino Gallery with Yubi Kirindongo in Art Dimension. This upcoming exhibition will be Steve’s first solo exhibition in Curaçao.
Museo Tula is located in Landhuis Knip, Bándabou, Curaçao. The exhibition remains till October 28, 2024.
