Solo exhibition by the multi-faceted and talented artist Femia H. Jantzen

FACES

Location: The Curaçao Museum, Snip Gallery
Time: 17:00 to 19:00.

About Femia H. Jantzen
Femia comes from an artistic family. Piano lessons and drawing classes at home were common in the family of her great-grandfather, Johan Lebret. His brother, Frans, was a painter and founded the Art Circle in Dordrecht. A sister of Femia’s father was also a portrait painter.

During her childhood, Femia often visited the Mauve family. The Mauve family is a renowned Dutch family of artists known for their influential role in 19th-century painting, particularly within the movement known as the Haagse School [The Hague School, 1860-1890].

Femia was familiar with Anton Mauve (1838-1888) of the Hague School and friendly with Thijs Mauve (1915-1996), who was Anton’s grandson. When Femia saw the beautiful birch trees and other works by Thijs Mauve, whom she knew as Uncle Thijs, she thought, “That’s what I want to do!”

From 1984 to 1994, Femia participated in numerous art and educational exhibitions. In 1995, she relocated to Curaçao, where she joined several exhibitions.

In 2000, she showcased the exhibition “Het Andere Amerika” [The Other America], which she had curated in 1992 at the Museon in The Hague,  again at the Curacao Museum.

Femia spent many years as a birder in the mondi of Banda Bou, taking pictures of not only birds but also other animals. She also creates digital art designs to accompany her haikus and poems.

Femia has participated twice in the Literaire Tippelzone [Literary Red-Light District] in Curaçao (organized by Fundashon di Artista), both times with her Haikus and poems. She has won the 2nd Selexyz prize with her poem Emptiness [Leegte]. Selexyz was a leading Dutch bookstore brand (1992-2012).
She is a loyal member of the Urban Sketchers Curacao, for whom the Curaçao Museum often opens its beautiful gardens.

Femia uses pencils, gel pens, markers, and ink, and she currently follows her artistic inspirations, such as cubist birds and colorful portraits, inspired by decay, damage, stains, cracks, wet and dirty floors, or broken tiles.

She finds happiness and satisfaction in her work. She recognizes beauty where most of us do not. She looks much deeper and beyond anything with her creative eye, and observes art in every corner. At her solo exhibition at The Curacao Museum, she displays her inspiring and joyful work.

There is so much more that the Curaçao Museum wants to share about Femia, her career, her diverse passions, and her personality. Still, the museum invites you to visit the opening of Femia’s solo exhibition. At the museum, you will explore Femia’s unique depiction of human expressions and emotions in the FACES exhibition.

The Curaçao Museum welcomes visitors to this special occasion, to share and celebrate Femia’s talent, her art, and Femia herself, as it’s her birthday on June 14th.
