Mon Art Gallery: Rozendaal
Curaçao, October 22, 2013.
The Rozendaal exhibition in Mon Art Gallery Curaçao, features a new collection by visual artist Stan Kuiperi (1954) from Aruba. It shows the artist’s wide range of interests in themes he utilizes to create new forms and contents in art.
Stan Kuiperi is best known for his Aruba-inspired abstract landscape paintings dating from the early ‘80s in Europe, and his efforts to inspire awareness of local cultural heritage through the use of authentic native petrography (rock description and classification) in his work. As a creative artist however, he has also successfully explored many visual venues such as graphic designs, installations and object-art, photography, prints and mixed media works, all part of an extensive international career.
His latest endeavor is the Rozendaal collection, a series of mixed media works on Arches-paper inspired by old photographs of his grand- and great-grandparents’ life on the Rozendaal plantation in Willemstad, Curaçao. The fact that the Rozendaal residence and grounds were later completely eliminated, and that the generations who lived there have now all passed on, only makes the subject more intriguing for the artist.
The collection of works is based on printed photographic collages on treated paper, which are hand colored and reworked in a third phase of the creation process. The images are intimate, personal interpretations of valuable historic material. Stan Kuiperi uses his creative license to return to the past, to listen to bygone voices, to sense how the ancestors felt and thought, to discover their challenges and triumphs, and to explore minute details of his own ancestry.
Rozendaal is Stan Kuiperi’s homage to all the ‘old families’ everywhere, a visual acknowledgment of those on whose shoulders today we stand.
