Charles Eyck exhibition in Bloemhof

Curaçao, November 7, 2013.

Sixty years ago, the Dutch visual artist Charles Ecyk (1897-1983), stayed in Curaçao for a period of several months. He had been invited by doctor Chris Engels (1907-1980) and during that visit also spent a few weeks in Bonaire. His sojourn to the two islands was very productive and he left behind several paintings and even monumental artworks like the tile-scene on the south  side of the church at the St. Elisabeth Hospitaal (Sehos).

Charles Ecyk was deaf and dumb and was therefore continually sketching and writing. In this way he documented all his impressions of his visit to Curaçao and Bonaire: the picturesque alleys in Punda and Otrobanda, the setting sun, the local industries, the colorful houses of the city and in the ‘kunuku’ (countryside) and also the people! He clearly enjoyed his stay, and the artworks in the coming exhibition show it.
