IBB exhibition by Marieke Zwart

Visual artist Marieke Zwart (Netherlands, 1987) is exhibiting new work at Instituto Buena Bista (IBB) in Curaçao.

Marieke Zwart
Artist In Residence Marieke Zwart comes from Amsterdam and has been residing at Instituto Buena Bista (IBB) since the beginning of January 2014. She works primarily with drawings and installations, searching to work outside of the conventional art scene of museums and galleries. In her Portrait-project she puts herself next to people of different social origins. This is how she, as an artist, wants to give people a voice in a new environment, meanwhile searching to find her own sound.
In the upcoming exhibition Zwart will exhibit her most recent work. During her four-month stay in Curaçao she also worked with the art students of IBB and clients of the psychiatric clinic. At the exhibition her new videos, drawings and sculptures will be displayed throughout the areas of IBB and the grounds of Klinika Capriles, giving visitors the opportunity to wander along the works, much in the same way as she herself wandered across the island, discovering unknown places. She hopes visitors to the exhibition will now want to join her and cross unknown paths in Klinika Capriles.
While touring the various locations in the exhibition many things will come together that at first glance may seem quite removed from each other: a portrait of a nude handyman, tourists frying in the sun on the beach, the whispered singing of a track by rapper Kanye West, a struggling cockroach lying on its back, and teaching IBB’s art students. Marieke Zwart’s approach fits with the IBB, where an open mind and participation are required.
The exhibition remains till May 30, 2014.
