The 1795 fight for freedom by the enslaved in Curaçao
On August 17, 1795, the enslaved people of the Knip Plantation in Curaçao informed their master, Shon Caspar van Uytrecht, that they wouldn’t work for him anymore. Thus started a slave rebellion at the end of the 18th century in Curaçao that would later become known as the Great slave rebellion of 1795. The most important leader of the uprising was Tula, enslaved at the Knip plantation.
Despite its importance for our history, we need more artifacts or objects to make the event visual for present generations. Charles Do Rego was the first person to thoroughly investigate the archives and create a publication with maps to explain where and how everything took place.
Using the publication by Charles Do Rego, Josée Thissen-Rojer invited 15 artists to create a visual arts exhibition about the 1795 slave uprising. Each artist chose a part of the story that appealed to them most. Then, they were each asked to create an artwork in their style and medium. Some artists chose a historical figure; others were inspired by important events.
Publication by Charles Do Rego, together with the artworks by local visual artists, form an extraordinary and influential exhibition in the exhibition rooms of Villa Maria. This exhibition was meant to take place in Museo Tula at Landhuis Knip, but regretfully, the museum was no longer available. Villa Maria is a solution to bring this unique exhibition to a large public.
