May Henriquez in Beelden aan Zee

In the retrospective exhibition on sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967), ‘Zadkine by the Sea‘ in the museum Beelden aan Zee in the Netherlands, there was also an homage to a special student of Ossip Zadkine, May Henriquez (1915-1999) from Curaçao.

Zadkine by the Sea. Retrospective Ossip Zadkine
With more than 100 sculptures, the fascinating and varied oeuvre of the Belarus-born sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967) was exhibited in museum Beelden aan zee. The exhibition illustrated the personal development of Zadkine against the background of the turbulent 20th century. Guest conservator Heico Hoekstra’s concept for the exhibition, which in 2017 was awarded the Turing Toekenning II, analyzed Zadkine’s ideas in seven sections.

In addition to the major retrospective, two smaller presentations devoted attention to Zadkine:
May ~ Ossip: Zadkine in exotic climes in the Quist Gallery drew attention to Zadkine’s only Curaçaoan student, the sculptress and mecenas May Henriquez (1915-1999).
Dutch photographers see Zadkine features a series of photographs compiled by conservator Flip Bool, displayed in the Kleine Zaal of the museum.
