Pos Salu Sculpture Park

SKOR Kòrsou was founded by Curaçao visual artist Avantia Damberg in 2021. The foundation focuses on placing site-specific artworks in the public spaces of Curacao. The artworks can be created by local or international artists.

The brand new sculptures in the park at Pos Salu at Groot Sint Joris were unveiled at sunset on November 16, 2024, in the presence of a delegation of the Mondriaan Fund, headed by director Eelco van der Lingen, and representatives of Het Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied. The sculptures were commissioned by Stichting Uniek Curaçao, that manages several nature reserves on Curaçao, and is led by Theo van der Giessen.

Grouped sculptures
At a carefully chosen location on the grounds of Pos Salu, a slight elevation has been made, covered with white pebble stones, where the sculptures are grouped. Mrs. Lisette Sambo-Velder, director of Sector Cultuur en Sport, is present and happily assists with unveiling the sculptures.

DNA and Indigenous symbols
The first work to be unveiled is by Avantia Damberg and is inspired by her own DNA. The sculpture is titled Kuracaubá. It features a large oval form adorned with small shapes that carry symbols referring to the data of her DNA, as well as symbols of the indigenous inhabitants of Curaçao.

The tear
Then follows the unveiling of the work of Giovanni Abath, who signs his artworks with his pseudonym 7.1. His work is titled Tears. A single large, gold-colored droplet dangles from the top of a triangular structure. The artist explains that the tear symbolizes the hurt of the indigenous people of Curaçao, should they witness the waste that is dumped regularly at the site of Pos Salu.

Connected through history
The third unveiling is a sculpture by Dutch artist Albert Kramer and is titled Not Chained But Connected. It features two elongated figures, one black and the other one white, whose torsos are entwined. Their faces are turned towards each other. Through Avantia’s phone, Albert Kramer is present at the ceremony, via a live connection.

Finally, a fourth sculpture, created by the three artists together, is unveiled. Three poles of different heights, on a triangular base, each carrying a symbol of connection. Together, the four sculptures are an ode to Curacao’s past and present inhabitants, and the island’s history.

Projects by SKOR
SKOR Kòrsou stands for Stichting Kunst in Openbare Ruimte (Foundation for Art in Public Spaces). SKOR’s first project was realized in 2023 at Seru Papaya. In this project, a staircase that leads from the road to the Seru Papaya neighborhood was renovated, decoratively tiled and painted by Avantia Damberg in collaboration with visual artist Lena Davidovich. Lena had come to Curaçao from Amsterdam, especially for this project. The two artists worked with a group of enthusiastic and dedicated teenagers from Seru Papaya to beautify the stairs.

In January 2025, SKOR will complete its third project, a collaboration by Avantia Damberg with Maura Biava, a visual artist from the Netherlands.
