Opening-words by Eduardo Vlieg.
An exhibition of 21 photographs by Eduardo Vlieg, all taken in Curacao between 2016 and 2026. Each image reveals a different part of the island’s character, from its colorful architecture to everyday moments and the quiet beauty of its nature. That is why he named the exhibition ‘Korsou, di Tur un Poko’ (Curacao, a bit of it all).
Eduardo Vlieg has been taking photographs since his teen years. His mother, Lea Smunis, was a schoolteacher and loved doing arts & crafts at home. This piqued Eduardo’s interest in art and culture. After buying his first digital camera in 2006, in the years that followed he gradually developed a real passion for photography.
In daily life, he works as an ICT manager at the Curacao Gaming Authority. However, since 2016, photography has become his way of life, something he will always continue to do. This exhibition has been taking shape in his mind for 6 to 7 years.
Beauty of life
When taking photographs, Eduardo is guided by what captures his interest and he wants to show the beauty of life. It can be people, nature or architecture. He needs to feel free and enjoy himself when taking photographs. He happily shares his work on social media, but stresses that he is not driven by likes.
Eduardo uses his phone or a Nikon camera. He doesn’t work with Photoshop, but will crop a picture to make the topic stand out. He did this, for instance, with his photograph of the Blenchi (Hummingbird): cropping the picture to focus on the bird feeding on nectar from a flower. It’s a picture he took in his own garden, as he knows which plants the birds like to feed on.
Sometimes he has an idea for a specific photoshoot and will work with models. He has been approached a few times for wedding photography, and though he can shoot a beautiful reportage and his clients have always been satisfied, he decided not to keep doing it.
Magical
What Eduardo loves about photography is the magical part: “You see, I know how to take photos, but sometimes when I look at the final result, I am amazed at how well everything turned out. I can account for 70% of it with my experience, technique and equipment. But the remaining 30% baffles me. The only explanation I have is that some kind of magic is involved!”
From his large photo database, he first selected 21 pictures, which he then had printed on canvas. After that, he set out to find a gallery or venue to show his work. Gallery 9, led by Philip Chapman, was a perfect match for him.
Exposure and success
His reason for holding an exhibition is to gain exposure for his work. Of course, he has his website and social media, but he also wants to become the best possible photographer, and for that, he feels the need to start showing his work in person and receive direct feedback from peers and audiences.
The exhibition remains till May 30, 2026.
