POP-UP ART EXHIBITION: CONTEMPORARY ART IN A HISTORIC SETTING.
New exhibition at the Quarantine Building in Otrobanda.

Opening: Friday, June 26, 2026
Time: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Location: Quarantine Building Mundo Nobo.

Opening remarks by Lusette Verboom.

The Quarantine Building
The quarantine building at Mundo Nobo dates back to 1856 and was an annex of the military hospital. In 1969, the Curaçaosche Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (Curacao Academy of Fine Arts) was established here, which later became known as Akademia di Arte.

The building has been vacant for decades and was in poor condition when Alex Postma and Gwen Anderson purchased it in 2023. The new owners are exploring whether the property can serve a cultural purpose, and this pop-up is the first activity towards that goal.

An indoor exhibition?
The walls of the three-story building have been braced to ensure safety for visitors. There is no roof, and the floors of the upper levels have been removed. It’s actually almost an open-air exhibition. Notably, there is a large chimney to the left of the entrance, which extends from the ground floor up through the roofline of the third floor. With all the floors and ceilings removed, the chimney is an impressive sight.

Spontaneous
The exhibition formed itself naturally. Most of the artworks are sculptures by Angel de la Rosa and paintings from 2006 by Gwen Anderson. At present, Gwen is also holding a solo show of recent work at The Curacao Museum, on the opposite side of the road, titled ‘Connecting the Pieces’.

During the preparations Angel spontaneously invited a few friends like Osmani Arias Jerez, who created the amazing work ‘Caballo’, and the striking furniture set ‘Tesoro di Mondi’, made of local wood. It is, in fact, Osmani’s first exhibition in Curacao. The large, round portrait of the winking man is by Jhomar Loaiza, a well-known Venezuelan muralist whose colorful work is in high demand on the island.

Due to the success of the present exhibition, Angel de la Rosa might organize more shows in the future.
