Opening-words by Nicole Henriquez.
This exhibition, The Art of Amazement, delves into the human capacity to see beyond the surface and embrace life’s beauty and complexity. Babette de Waele channels her fascination with the wonders of nature, humanity, and social issues into vibrant, colorful paintings. Martie Genger reflects her amazement of human behavior through her nontraditional use of repurposed materials and thought-provoking installations. Herman van Bergen, known for his Cathedral of Thorns, adds light with his “Thorns the Light Within” collection of lamps.
Babette de Waele
Babette de Waele encounters her amazement in nature, humanity, and everyday life, with a clear focus on social interactions and animal rights. She uses various techniques in her paintings to capture these wonders in a vibrant color palette. “Completely opening myself up to nature has a healing effect on me. I can reach beyond my reality and find comfort in it. But I can also be deeply moved by what I see. Perfectly happy by simplicity.”
Martie Genger
Martie Genger, known for her innovative (re)use of materials, striking installations, and written oeuvre, likes to mirror human behavior in her work. Sometimes with a wink, sometimes with a sarcastic undertone, and sometimes in a deadly serious manner. “I can be so amazed by people and what they do. And when that strikes me again, something almost immediately comes out of my hands. I have to react to what happens, to make people aware, to let them think, or at least to let them stand still for a moment to reflect on what is happening.”
Herman van Bergen
The Cathedral of Thorns is the most famous artwork by Herman van Bergen. The artist has made the sumpiña bush (acacia tortuosa) his trademark and expresses his wonder about the world and how people interact. Initially, Herman van Bergen was supposed to exhibit together with Babette de Waele, but due to health issues, this was not possible. Yet some of his lamps, known as “Thorns The Light Within,” will complement this exhibition.
This exhibition invites you to experience art that challenges and inspires. It is on display until September 14.
