LIFE was opened on Wednesday, June 17. Photographer Carlos Tramm exhibits his own work again, after a long time. He was one of the first photographers to exhibit pictures of local people, buildings and nature. In 1995 he published the book ‘In dit licht’ (In this light) with pictures of nature and architecture in decay, accompanied by texts of the well known Curaçao author Boeli van Leeuwen (1922-2007). The book contains impressive photography of Willemstad, just before the large restoration process of the inner city began.
The present show is held in Tramm’s own studio at the dr. Hugenholtz weg. All photo’s are printed the same size, 120 x 80 cm and given the same black frame. At the entrance the visitor is immediately confronted with a large portrait of Dominga Tramm, Carlos’ recently deceased wife, covered in a raincoat and courageously smiling at the visitor. The photographer captured her quick smile exchanging a nod of understanding and courage with her husband.
The well known photographer Elliott Erwitt once said “Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” This is very true for the work of Carlos Tramm. His inspiration is in his surroundings, which he captures in his frame, showing us not only what he sees but also how he sees it. Be it a flower, a city scape or stairs leading up to a balcony. His images are straight forward, but still manage to intrigue. Tramm plays with light and composition, always looking for the perfect spot and the right angle.
In LIFE photographs of Curaçao are alternated with pictures taken in Colombia. The whole exhibition is impressive, not only because of the size of the paintings and the large studio but also because of the quality of the series. A total of 84 artworks are displayed but only one is signed by the artist. Number 76 is a picture of a small, battered fisherman’s boat, tied to buoy. Tramm signed it and added the words ‘my life’.
LIFE is dedicated to Dominga Tramm, who passed away earlier this month. All proceeds of sale are donated to Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds Curaçao. The exhibition remains till July 3, 2015.
