On Friday afternoon supporters and sponsors of the Cathedral of Thorns gathered at the construction site to celebrate the reaching of the highest point. The Cathedral of Thorns is the life’s work of renowned visual artist Herman van Bergen.
The cathedral is created using the thorns of the local Acacia Tortuosa and the building is constructed as a labyrinth. In this project architectural motives of all world religions are combined, supporting the vision of the artist that the world needs to focus on the similarities of the various religions.
The use of the Acacia Tortuosa’s thorns is a reference to resilience. When in the colonial period the local wood was cut and exported, nature’s first vegetation to return to the barren ground was the Acacia Tortuosa.
Artist Van Bergen first started to use the thorns in artworks and later did extensive research before embarking on this prestigious project. By reaching out to local artist to contribute to the project with their art and at several stages involving the youth in the construction, he has also made it a community project.
Now reaching the highest point, the finish line is coming within reach. Curaçao Art congratulates Herman van Bergen and Daisy Casimiri with this milestone and wishes them strength in the last stage to the finish line.
