‘We seek turmoil’, by Uniarte.

“LOOKING FOR WHAT IS ONE’S OWN IS A CONSTANT SEARCH” is how the Uniarte Foundation opened its program at the beginning of this year. Now ten months on, one can see what this is producing. The online exhibition can be viewed on Uniarte’s website.

Uniarte’s annual program is based on new forms of collaboration in the arts sector. For all involved, the project was an experiment. For example, artists from the various Caribbean islands and Suriname collaborated on their art objects in an online residency. Each work in their own country but in close contact with the other under the guidance of a curator.

In any case, the pandemic has provided communities with a new means of communication; Zoom allows a cooperative exchange of ideas from different places worldwide. This resulted in unique experiences and beautiful conversations.

Curator Yina Jiménez from Santo Domingo provided the inspiration and focus, working for six months with 11 Caribbean artists. Works developed in image, sound, film, and GIFs. Deep concepts developed from studios and workplaces, and unexpected art expressions emerged.

The results will be on public view starting October 25 at the online exhibition “We seek turmoil” (Nos ta buska temblor).

The title of this exhibition aims to engage the public in the quest to broaden the perspectives from which we approach contemporary reality. Shaking, as a sudden movement to release energy, allows us to gradually shake off binary and stable ideas that have conditioned and institutionalized us. Through this movement, which suddenly appears and disappears, we find our way of life.

The interpretation of the 11 artists led to surprising insights and a colorful variety of work.

The exhibition was created with financial support from the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and the Friends Lottery Foundation.  Art as a connecting factor, in which artists from the Caribbean discovered each other’s shared strengths and built connecting relationships.
